How to Create Kid’s Wall Art
Using Rubber Stamps and Wall Stencils

 By Sherrie Le Masurier

When it comes to kid’s wall decor you can’t beat rubber stamps and wall stencils to easily create kid’s wall art.
Rubber stamping and stenciling allows you to create a personalized look on kid’s walls. You can be creative with colors and the variety of rubber stamps and stencils you use. Furthermore, this kind of kid’s wall art activity lends itself well to interaction between you and your child as the two of you can work together to customize hiskid’s room.
Your first step is to come up with an idea. What about a simple landscape with some highlights of nature like apple trees, butterflies, flowers etc.? Or you may wish to use a variety of rubber stamps and create a patterned wall border.

Rubber stamps can be purchased in sets or bought individually. Sets are typically less expensive and will give you a wide array of stamp designs needed to create your personal kid’s wall art. It’s always best to select stamp designs that will transfer clearly to your wall. Generally you want to use larger and bolder rubber stamps with less design detail.
Whether painting directly on kid’s walls or using a canvas, the process is pretty much the same.

If using a canvas, you’ll want to purchase one that’s pre-stretched on a board frame. If the canvas sheet has already been processed then you’re good to go otherwise, you’ll need to add a coat of white paint first.
If you’re working with a previously painted wall be sure to clean it prior to rubber stamping. Dust, vacuum and wipe off marks and spots. You want to start with a clean palette so the rubber stamp impressions will imprint properly on the surface.
Whether you’re creating a mural right on your kid’s wall itself or using a canvas, you want to start by sketching a basic shape or landscape design. You don’t have to be particularly artistic you just have to be able to draw simple lines to simulate hills and clouds. Then paint in the background colors - green hills, blue sky, white clouds etc.

Let any fresh paint dry completely then use a variety of rubber stamps to create your design.

For the bottom of your wall or canvas, you may want to select grass designed stamps in various sizes, adding in a few flowers and butterflies as you go. You can also paint a simple tree and add in leaves and apples. To finish off the sky you should be able to find a nice assortment of bird and sun stamps to select from. Another option would be to purchase rubber stamps that feature clouds. Personally, I’ve always painted my own clouds but using cloud stamps would make the look of you mural or kid’s wall art canvas more cohesive.
Press your selected rubber stamps in the ink pad hard enough to get ink on the whole design (but not so hard that there’s a glob of ink that will smear your design). Then press the inked rubber stamp firmly on the wall, rocking it slightly to make sure the whole image is transferring properly. Repeat for each impression until your overall design is done.
Clean your rubber stamps after a few impressions to make sure they aren’t getting too inky. Of course, if you’re changing ink colors you should definitely clean between impressions so your ink pad stays one color.

Let your inked impressions dry completely. Don’t touch them while they are drying or they may smear.

Another fun way to personalize your kid’s room is to use alphabet stamps or stencils to spell out your child’s name.
When using rubber stamps or stencils as part of your kid’s wall decor, you want to give careful thought to your use of colors. You want to have at least three color bottles of the stamp ink. Your basic colors would be red, blue, and yellow as you can easily mix them together to create other colors. Personally, I like to have green and white at my disposal as well so I have an even greater selection of colors to choose from. Partnering up with your child for this kid’s wall art project also provides a great opportunity to teach the basics of color combining.

Looking to create stencils that are similar to your rubber stamps but just a tad larger?

Simply copy the images from the stamps onto thin pieces of cardboard using a pencil. Next, use a cutter and/or scissors to remove the design holes. Once done, the enlarged stamp images can be used as stencils to create kid’s wall borders or to fashion an accent wall with the look of wallpaper – just repeat the pattern over and over again.
Please note: it’s wise to test out any rubber stamps and homemade stencils on a sheet of blank paper prior to applying on kid’s walls just to make sure the desired look is achieved.
