Window Decor: Selecting Kid’s Drapes and Kid’s Curtains

 By Sherrie Le Masurier

When it comes to window decor for kid’s rooms you need to think both function andfashion. Thinking outside the window frame opens up a wide range of creative ideas.

Before we get started, I want to clarify the difference between kid’s drapes and kid’s curtains. It’s really quite simple kid’s drapes are more pleated and formal whereas kid’s curtains are generally gathered and more informal. However for the most part, the two window decor terms are interchangeable.

Both kid’s drapes and kid’s curtains enhance a window with long flows of fabric. They can be pulled back with ties or designed to open and close in a variety of ways.

Following are some general kid-friendly tips for selecting kid’s drapes and kid’s curtains as well as some fun window decor ideas:

*Don’t hang long drapes or curtains in bedrooms of young children as they usually love to grab and pull on things and the long fabric panels would just the thing to attract their sticky little hands.

*Decorative beading that could easily be pulled off and swallowed is also dangerous in rooms of children under the age of three.

*When measuring your child’s window(s) take shorter drapes and curtains into consideration.

*Consider light and airy kid’s drapes and kid’s curtains with a room darkening shade underneath for naptime and privacy at night.

*Whether buying or making your own kid’s drapes or kid’s curtains consider machine washable fabrics as you may want to occasionally freshen them up by laundering or shaking off the dust and tossing them in the dryer with a fabric sheet.

*If you opt for mini-blinds or wood blinds vs. kid’s drapes and kid’s curtain be sure you select ones that are easy to clean. Small multi-fingered static brushes are idea for dusting mini blinds and larger individual static brushes are good for getting in between the wider slats of a wood blind.

*Think safety. Install safe lead-free blinds. Make sure your blinds either have breakaway cords or the cords are secured out of harm’s reach.

*Old-fashioned roller shades are also a nice complement to a set of kid’s drapes or curtains. Most roller shades come in regular as well as light-blocking styles.

For an added window décor element you can purchase decorative roller shades that are finished with lace, ribbon and/or silk tassels. Another great thing about roller shades is that when matched up with light and airy kid’s curtains, they can be raised up during the daytime, leaving the natural sunlight to be filtered through or between a set of kid’s drapes.
