A Functional Kids Closet Starts With
A Good Closet Design
By Sherrie Le Masurier
Having a functional kid’s closet can make a difference between having an organized and disorganized kid’s room and it can all be attributed to having a good closet design.
You see, if you provide adequate storage than is age and height appropriate your child can no longer use the excuse that she can’t hang up her clothes because she can’t reach the rod or she doesn’t have anywhere to put her folded clothing and accessories.
To become independent your child needs to be able to access her own clothing and be able to easily put it away. This can be done by repositioning the closet rod at a height appropriate level or incorporating a second lower rod into the closet design.
For taller kids or teens, don’t dismiss the idea of installing a second rod beneath the first to create double hang-up space. You may want to reserve the higher rod for ‘good’ clothes that are worn only on special occasions.
You can easily and inexpensively make a second rod by using a wooden broomstick to which you’ve added screw-in hooks on each end. Then simply attach it to the upper rod with a chain and two ‘S’ hooks.
Another effective closet storage idea is to install shelves at child-accessible heights. This is ideal for bulky items like sweatshirts and sweaters. Closet shelves are also a great place to store jeans.
Storage bins and baskets can also be incorporated as part of your kid’s closet design and used for socks, underwear and accessories.
Closet design is all about maximizing the existing space and making the most of the many kids closet organizer tools that are one the market. Decide on one or two priority kids organizers that your child’s closet needs and then work from there.
In addition to shelving you may want to consider incorporating a series of hooks into your kid’s closet design. These hooks are ideal for everything from robes to jackets.
Plastic milk-type crates are among some of the best kid’s closet storage containers. To maximize space in your kid’s closet consider stacking plastic crates on one side and hanging all tops and other short items just above.
On the other side where there are longer items like pants, skirts or dresses you could use just one or if you have room, two crates positioned side by side. Alternatively you could use a short shoe rack in this area.
Take this kids closet design idea one step further and purchase ready made tower shelving. Similar to the crate idea, tower shelving is a one piece unit that’s ideal for storing sweaters, sweatshirts, pajamas, jeans or any other items that require folding.
Another kid’s organizer alterative is a hanging sweater bag. Usually made of canvas, this type of bag hangs from the rod itself and is a kid’s closet design tool that can also be folded up for travel purposes. Depending on the length and the number of sections your hanging storage bag has there may also be room on the closet floor for a couple of bins, baskets, crates, or shoe racks.
You can also take this kid’s closet hanging storage idea one step further and purchase a seven day kids organizer that comes with shelf-like pockets. This kind of canvas shelving unit also hangs from the closet rod and is ideal for storing individual outfits – one for each day of the week.
Other kid’s closet organizational ideas include grouping your child’s clothing by color. Ask your child if she would like her clothes grouped by color or by type of clothing e.g. school clothes and play clothes. Or maybe she would like to keep unlike things separate - one grouping for T-shirts, one for dresses, and one for skirts.
The same kid’s closet organizational method can be used for all the other items in the closet – shoes, baseball caps, bags etc. If she doesn’t find a particular grouping system to her liking she can always opt to change it later on.
The bottom line is that a good closet design is all about making the most of your kid’s closet and utilizing every inch of the space. So when you think of kid’s closet storage and what’s available in kid’s organizers also think inside and outside of the closet. Consider how valuable your kid’s closet door can be for hanging things. Over the door hangers and shoe bags are great kid’s organizers you may wish to incorporate.
When starting a closet design concept from scratch you want to think of your kid’s closet as a box and outfit it in the most appropriate way giving thought to other storage possibilities elsewhere in your child’s bedroom.
If your child currently needs very little space for hanging her clothing, you may want to enhance her closet design and storage space by installing a versatile kid’s closet organizer unit with adjustable shelves, drawers and rods that will maximize the usable space yet gives her flexibility should her needs change.
Another closet design idea is to build removable shelves on one side of your kid’s closet. For young kids this allows them to keep their everyday items like toys and games on a low shelf. As your child grows, the lower shelves can be used for footwear.
So as you can see, a good closet design, hanging kid’s organizers, a secondary rod, added shelving and kids storage containers all work hand in hand to create a functional kid’s closet that works to your child’s advantage keeping everything organized and easily accessible.
